FII DII data: FPI sold shares worth Rs 3065.35 crore, DII bought shares worth Rs 2371.36 crore on Feb 2

Foreign institutional investors (FII) sold shares worth a net Rs 3065.35 crore while domestic institutional investors (DII) bought shares worth a net Rs 2371.36 crore on Thursday, February 2, 2023, according to the data available on NSE. For the month till February 2, FIIs sold shares worth a net Rs 1,280.14 while DIIs bought shares worth a net Rs 2,900.83 crore. In the month of January, FIIs sold shares worth a net of Rs 41,464.73 crore while DIIs purchased equities worth a net of Rs 33,411.85 crore.

Foreign institutional investors (FII) or Foreign portfolio investors (FPI) are those who invest in the financial assets of a country while not being part of it. On the other hand, domestic institutional investors (DII), as the name suggests, invest in the country they’re living in. Political and economic trends impact the investment decisions of both FIIs and DIIs. Additionally, both types of investors — foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) —  can impact the economy’s net investment flows.

“The Nifty witnessed swings in both directions on February 02 & ultimately posted a minor negative close. Despite multiple attempts, the index couldn’t sustain in the positive territory. The hourly chart shows that the 20 HMA acted as a cap on the higher side, whereas the hourly lower Bollinger Band offered support to the index. Thus 17650 – 17450 is the tight range within the overall short-term range of 17350-18000. The bulls can get some relief if the index crosses the 17650-17700 area on the higher side,” said Gaurav Ratnaparkhi, Head of Technical Research, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

Adani Group stocks survive MSCI indices review for now, but sword hangs over weightage; this is what can hurt

Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) on Thursday cut the free-float designations of four Adani group stocks, a move that analysts have warned could impact index weightings. The index provider said in a statement it has reduced the free floats of Adani Enterprises, Adani Total Gas, Adani Transmission and ACC. The remaining Adani group companies’ free floats will remain the same. The four companies, for which the free float designation change was announced, had a combined 0.4% weighting in the MSCI emerging markets index as of 30 January. The changes come into effect on 1 March 2023.

MSCI said Wednesday it was reviewing the amount of shares linked to the group that were freely tradable in public markets. Given the reduction in weightage, Adani Transmission (-$145 million), Adani Total Gas (-$110 million) and Adani Enterprises (-$161 million) might see the heaviest outflow among all, according to Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research. Other stocks that are likely to witness selling due to a reduction in weightage are HCL Technologies (-$97 million), Jindal Steel & Power (-$19 million), Shriram Finance (-$14 million), and ACC (-$12 million), the brokerage firm added.

Meanwhile, Bank of Baroda and CG Power & Industrial have been included in the MSCI India index, while Biocon has been excluded from the index, said MSCI in a release. With this, CG Power and Bank of Baroda could witness inflows of around $161 million and $145 million, respectively, according to Abhilash Pagaria of Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research. Whereas Biocon could see an outflow of $68 million, he added in the note. These changes will take place as of the close of 28 February 2023, MSCI added.

Nifty downtrend likely to continue, go slow on fresh longs; Buy these two stocks for potential gains

By Subash Gangadharan

Nifty 50 has been trending lower for the last few weeks and making lower tops and lower bottoms in the process. And Nifty has been moving lower after the recent breakdown from 16,824-17,415 trading range. While we remain open to pullback rallies in the very near term, we expect the downtrend to continue. Our short term bearish view would turn bullish only if the Nifty manages to take out the highs of 17,133. Therefore recommend a go-slow approach on fresh longs till we see signs of sustainable strength.

Buy Gujarat Gas

Gujarat Gas has shown relative strength this week. While the Nifty index has lost 1.27% this week, Gujarat Gas has gained 4.55% over the same time period. In the process, the stock has also broken out of its recent trading range on the back of above average volumes.

Zooming into the daily chart, we can observe that the stock trades above the 20 day SMA. Daily momentum indicators like the 14-day RSI too are in rising mode and not overbought, which augurs well for the short term uptrend to continue.

We therefore believe the stock has the potential to move higher and take out its previous intermediate highs in the coming weeks. We recommend a buy between the 537-541 levels. CMP is 539.35. Stop loss is at 502 while target is at 600.

Buy Axis Bank

After correcting from a high of 816 touched in April 2022, Axis Bank found support at the 648 levels in May 2022. These are strong support levels as they correspond to previous intermediate lows touched in December 2021.

On Wednesday, the stock broke out of its recent trading range. Momentum readings like the 14-day RSI too have bounced back from oversold levels and are in rising mode now.

With the intermediate technical set up too looking positive, we believe the stock has the potential to move higher in the coming weeks and therefore recommend a buy between the 670-680 levels. CMP is 675.85. Stop loss is at 655 while target is at 710.

Crude oil climbs 3rd day on subdued dollar, US crude stocks’ drop

Oil prices rose early on Wednesday, extending gains from the previous two days, as the dollar fell after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell sounded less hawkish on interest rates than markets had expected and as U.S. crude stocks surprisingly fell. Brent crude futures inched up by 11 cents, or 0.1%, to $83.80 a barrel at 0119 GMT, adding to a 3.3% gain in the previous session.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures advanced by 13 cents, or 0.2%, to $77.27 a barrel, after jumping 4.1% in the previous session. The dollar index was down slightly at 103.29 in early trade, extending losses after Powell’s comments on Tuesday, making oil cheaper for those holding other currencies.

“If we have stronger than expected growth out of the developing world, (oil) prices will be firmer and OPEC will have to step up output. That’s not our core view. We don’t see a big surge in demand,” he said.

Supporting the market, weekly inventory data from the American Petroleum Institute industry group showed crude stocks fell by about 2.2 million barrels in the week ended Feb. 3, according to market sources. That defied expectations from nine analysts polled by Reuters, who had estimated crude stocks grew by 2.5 million barrels.

However, gasoline and distillate inventories rose more than expected, with gasoline stocks up by about 5.3 million barrels and distillate stocks, which include diesel and heating oil, up by about 1.1 million barrels. The market will be looking to see if data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, due at 1530 GMT, confirms the decline in crude stocks.

SEBI proposes to introduce 5 new categories under ESG funds

Capital markets regulator Sebi has proposed allowing mutual funds to introduce five new categories under ESG (environmental, social and governance) scheme.

The five new categories should be exclusions, integration, best-in-class and positive screening, impact investing and sustainable objectives.

Considering that AMCs may want to launch multiple diversified ESG schemes under the ESG category, Sebi has proposed that each asset management company should be permitted to launch one ESG scheme each under the five subcategories.

ESG schemes under the proposed new category should be permitted with a minimum 80 per cent investment of total assets in equity or debt stocks of a particular theme as per the sub-categories. However, the residual portion of the investment should not be starkly in contrast to the philosophy of the scheme.

“AMCs should endeavour to have a higher proportion of the assets under the ESG theme and make suitable disclosures,” the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in its consultation paper issued on Monday.

For the ESG exclusions scheme — the regulator has suggested that mutual funds should exclude securities based on certain ESG-related activities, business practices, or business segments and the ESG integration scheme should explicitly consider ESG-related factors that are material to the risk and return of the investment, along with traditional financial factors.

ESG best-in-class and positive screening scheme should invest in companies that perform better than peers in ESG parameters.

ESG impact investing scheme should seek a non-financial (real world) impact and evaluate if that impact is being measured and monitored; and ESG sustainable objectives scheme should aim to invest in sectors, industries, or companies that are expected to benefit from a long-term macro or structural ESG related trends.

To boost transparency, the regulator has proposed to mandate the AMCs to include the name of the particular ESG strategy in the name of the concerned fund or scheme.

In addition, the regulator has recommended mandating ESG schemes to disclose the name of the ESG rating provider alongside the score disclosures in the monthly portfolio disclosures.

The requirement should be made mandatory from April 1, 2023, Sebi suggested and sought comments from the public till March 6 on the proposals.
