FII DII data: FPI sold shares worth Rs 2559.96 crore, DII bought shares worth Rs 639.82 crore on Feb 7

Foreign institutional investors (FII) sold shares worth a net Rs 2559.96 crore while domestic institutional investors (DII) bought shares worth a net Rs 639.82 crore on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, according to the data available on NSE. For the month till February 7, FIIs sold shares worth a net Rs 5,990.68 crore while DIIs bought shares worth a net Rs 6,008.48 crore. In the month of January, FIIs sold shares worth a net of Rs 41,464.73 crore while DIIs purchased equities worth a net of Rs 33,411.85 crore.

Foreign institutional investors (FII) or Foreign portfolio investors (FPI) are those who invest in the financial assets of a country while not being part of it. On the other hand, domestic institutional investors (DII), as the name suggests, invest in the country they’re living in. Political and economic trends impact the investment decisions of both FIIs and DIIs. Additionally, both types of investors — foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) —  can impact the economy’s net investment flows.

“The MPC is likely to raise policy rates by 25 bp today. This is known to the market and is unlikely to have any meaningful impact on the market. The important trends impacting markets globally are the developments in the US economy and rate action by the Fed. The unabated FII selling – Rs 7774 crores in the last 3 sessions- is the biggest drag on the market now. In this context, traders will also use rallies to sell. What investors should do now is to buy high-quality stocks in growth segments like banking, IT, capital goods, telecom and cement and bottom-up investing across sectors. Patient investing now will fetch impressive returns in the medium to long term,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

Petrol and Diesel Rate Today, 15 February: Fuel prices unchanged; Check rates in Delhi, Mumbai, other cities

Petrol and Diesel Rate Today in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad: Fuel prices continued to stagnate on Wednesday, 15 February 2023, keeping costs steady for about eight months now. In Delhi, petrol is priced at Rs 96.72, while diesel in the National Capital is retailing at Rs 89.62 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol is retailing at Rs 106.31 per litre, and diesel is selling at Rs 94.27 per litre. The prices of petrol and diesel change state by state, depending upon various criteria such as Value Added Tax (VAT), freight charges, local taxes, etc. The last country-wide change in fuel rates was on 21 May last year, when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slashed excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and Rs 6 per litre on diesel.

Since the cut of excise duty by the central government in May 2022, some states have also reduced VAT prices on fuels, while some have imposed cess on petrol and diesel. The Punjab government decided to impose a cess of 90 paise per litre on petrol and diesel in a meeting of the state cabinet. Kerala Finance Minister KN Balagopal also announced a cess on petrol, diesel and liquor in the second full budget of the LDF government. A social security cess of Rs 2 per litre will be slapped on petrol and diesel.

Oil pricesslipped in early Asian trade on Wednesday after falling by more than $1 a barrel in the previous session as industry data pointed to a much bigger-than-expected surge in U.S. crude inventories.Brent crudefutures lost 20 cents to $85.38 per barrel by 0111 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures shed 19 cents to $78.87.

Public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) revise their prices daily in line with international benchmark prices and forex rates. Any changes in petrol and diesel costs are implemented from 6 am every day. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently asked OMCs to cut the retail prices of petrol and diesel if the crude oil prices in the international market come down and also if OMCs under recovery come down. OMCs incurred a loss of Rs 21,200 crore on account of selling petrol and diesel below the cost price.

Nifty to fall below 17650 or bulls to rage on Dalal Street? 7 things to know before share market opens

Indian benchmark indices are likely to open on a muted note, hinted SGX Nifty. On the Singapore Exchange, Nifty futures were in the red at 17838 level. In the previous session, Sensex closed 123 pts down at 60,683 and the Nifty ended 37 pts lower at 17,856. “The recent move in the Nifty index shows indecisiveness among the participants thus we recommend focusing more on stock selection and trade management. Traders should align their positions accordingly,” said Ajit Mishra, VP – Technical Research, Religare Broking Ltd.

Key levels to watch: “On the upside, 17950–18000 is a crucial resistance zone for Nifty, while the 50-DMA at 18120 is the next hurdle. Above this, we can expect a rally in the market. On the downside, 17777 and 17650 are immediate support levels, while 17350 is a critical base at any weakness. Bank Nifty is struggling to cross its 20-DMA, which is currently placed at 41700, and if it manages to cross this hurdle then we can expect a short covering rally towards the 42500-42700 zone. On the downside, 41000 is an immediate support level, while 40600 and 40000 are the next major support levels,” said Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd.

What will it take for Nifty to break out from prolonged range-bound trade since before Budget 2023?

Benchmark share market index NSE Nifty 50 has been trading range-bound for several weeks with no clear directional momentum. In the first week of February, Nifty closed higher by a mere 0.01%. The lack of movement can be attributed to various factors, including concerns over rising inflation, various ongoing geo-political crises, and global market volatility. Additionally, investors are still analyzing the impact of the recent Union Budget 2023 on the market, hoping for measures that could boost economic growth and provide direction for the markets.

The NIFTY 50 index has been trading within a narrow range since January 27, 2023, for almost 12 consecutive trading sessions, according to Rameshver Dongre, Research Analyst – Equity Research at CapitalVia. The market was unable to close above or below the range of 17,970-17,570 on the daily Spot NIFTY50 chart. Although the support level of 17,570 was tested multiple times during the budget session, the market was unable to stay below that level and eventually closed within the given range. Dongre stated that a decisive break on either side of this range could lead to significant movement in the NIFTY 50 index.

Following the Union Budget, the Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty indices were trading in a narrow range, with both stuck within the highs and lows made on budget day. According to Santosh Meena, Head of Research at Swastika Investmart, the high options prices ahead of significant events, such as the budget, the FOMC meeting, and RBI policy, contributed to the lack of momentum.

The Adani saga added fuel to the implied volatility (IV), which made options more expensive. This created an opportunity for option writers, who were able to take maximum benefit from the falling IV by keeping the market within the range. Meena added that higher volatility results in expensive options, making it profitable for option writers to maintain the range and capitalize on the falling IV.

Technical analysis and further direction

According to Amit Trivedi, CMT, Technical Analyst – Institutional Equities, YES SECURITIES, the Nifty 50 index has been consistently defending the critical support level of 17,700 on a closing basis. However, he noted that there is a lack of required upward momentum, and he believed that a decisive breakthrough and the ability to sustain above 17,900 is crucial for the index to attempt a move towards the 18,100-18,150 zone.

Nifty has strong CALL OI accumulation at 17800 levels, said Milan Vaishnav, CMT, MSTA. This makes this level strong resistance for the index. Importantly the 20-WEEK MA and 100-DAY MA are between 17,900-17,950 levels. This makes the zone of 17,900-18,000 a very stiff resistance area for the markets. The view is clear; any meaningful up moves shall occur only after Nifty is able to move past 18,000 levels convincingly. The support, at present, exists near 17,480.

“The global markets are witnessing some correction after strong US job data, but we are not showing much weakness as we have already underperformed in the month of January. There is a good chance that Nifty may complete its unfinished business to test its 200-DMA, which is currently placed at 17330, before any meaningful rally,” said Rameshver Dongre of CapitalVia.
