Markets Decoded: Strong US jobs data, caution ahead of RBI meet drag markets

Investors cautious ahead of RBI policy: Shrikant Chouhan, Kotak Securities

“While the sentiment has been sluggish over the past week or so, today’s fall can be attributed to weak Asian cues and cautious approach from the investors ahead of the RBI’s credit policy. Selling seemed to have been triggered by further strengthening of dollar against the rupee, leading to weakness in metal, power & select banking stocks. Moreover, markets may continue to witness bouts of intra-day volatility due to lack of any fresh positive triggers in the global arena.

Nifty could be less volatile going ahead: Deepak Jasani, HDFC Securities

Volumes on the NSE fell after seeing large volumes on the previous 3-4 sessions. Broad market indices ended higher even as the advance decline ratio was up at 1.11:1. Global stocks were largely down after last week’s stronger than expected US jobs report raised the likelihood of further interest rate increases and geopolitical concerns increased after the United States shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon that had floated across the country for days. Nifty witnessed the smallest high-low range in 4 sessions suggesting lower volatility going ahead.

Nifty Technical View: Non-directional activity to continue

17,700 key support level: Shrikant Chouhan, Kotak Securities

“Technically, the Nifty hovered between 17,700 to 17,800 price range. On daily charts the index has formed a small inside body bearish candle which is indicating the continuation of a non-directional activity in the near future. For Nifty, 17,700 would be the key support level and below the same the index could slip till 17,600-17,520. On the flip side, a fresh rally is possible only after the dismissal of 17,825 and above the same, the index could rally till 17,900-17,925.”

Crude oil steadies as investors await US Federal Reserve comments

Oil prices were steady on Wednesday as investors await the U.S. Federal Reserve’s comments after recent data pointed to the possibility of more interest rates hikes, which may lower economic growth and limit global fuel demand.

Brent crude futures for April delivery were up 2 cents to $83.07 a barrel by 0242 GMT after falling 1.2% on Tuesday. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for April were down a cent to $76.35 a barrel. The March WTI contract expired on Tuesday down 18 cents.

Other economic reports from the U.S., the world’s biggest oil consumer, showed some troubling signs however. Sales of existing homes fell in January to their lowest since October 2010, the 12th monthly drop, which is the longest streak since 1999.

“Oil prices came under pressure … as weak economic data raised concerns about demand in advanced economies,” said Daniel Hynes, senior commodity strategist at ANZ Bank, in a note. “Further rate hikes could dampen oil demand.”Higher interest rates tend to lift dollar prices, making dollar-denominated oil more expensive for holders of other currencies.

Expectations of tighter global supplies and rising demand from China have recently lent support to oil prices. Analysts expect China’s oil imports to hit a record high in 2023 to meet increased demand for transportation fuel and as new refineries come on stream.

ANZ’s Hynes noted that PetroChina and Unipec, the trading arm of Sinopec, Asia’s biggest oil refiner, have booked 10 supertankers to import oil from the U.S. next month, equal to about 20 million barrels of crude.

Cash-for-query row: Ethics panel asks Mahua Moitra to appear on Nov 2, says no further extension will be granted

The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee on Saturday asked Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra to appear before it on November 2 instead of October 31 in the cash-for-query case. The panel asserted that no further extension will be granted to her.

Earlier, on Thursday, BJP leader Nishikant Dubey and advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai appeared before the Ethics Committee to record their statements and give “oral evidence” in connection with the case against the TMC MP.

The committee, however, said it will not entertain any request for further extension.

The panel is probing BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s allegations that Moitra accepted bribes and favours for asking questions in Lok Sabha at the behest of businessman Darshan Hiranandani, CEO of the Hiranandani Group.

In his complaint to Speaker Om Birla, Dubey has cited documents shared by Dehadrai to back his cash-for-query allegations against the TMC MP. Moitra had referred to Dehadrai as “a jilted ex” in a social media post.

He also wrote to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging him to investigate the IP addresses of Moitra’s log-in credentials for Lok Sabha to check if they had been accessed by someone else.

On October 19, Darshan Hiranandani, in an affidavit to the Ethics Committee, claimed that Moitra provided him her Parliament login and password so that he could “post the questions” directly “on her behalf when required”. Moitra called the letter a “joke”, and said, “the draft of this letter was sent by the PMO and he (Darshan) was forced to sign it.”

In a three-page affidavit submitted to the committee and released to the press by the Hiranandani Group’s corporate communication team, Darshan Hiranandani, who lives in Dubai, said Moitra “thought that the only way to attack Sh. Modi (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) is by attacking Sh. Gautam Adani and his group as both were contemporaries, and they belong to the same state of Gujarat.”

Adani shares still under pressure; group firms lose $125-bn macp since January 24

Shares of Adani Group companies remained under pressure on Tuesday even as flagship Adani Enterprises posted a profit for the quarter ended December (Q3) on coal trading and airports performance.

Group companies have now lost over $125 billion, or Rs 10 trillion, in market capitalisation since the close of trading on January 24, a day before Hindenburg Research put out its report.

ACC and Adani Ports were the only other group companies to end in the green, up 0.4% and 2.1%, respectively.

Adani Green Energy, Adani Total Gas, Adani Transmission, Adani Wilmar, NDTV and Adani Power slid 5% each. Ambuja Cements was down 1.7% to Rs 336 apiece.

The government on Monday accepted the Supreme Court’s suggestion for a retired judge-led committee to study the recent fall in shares of Adani Group companies and recommend improvements in statutory and regulatory regimes governing the securities market to protect investors in future.

Two large Adani group companies are likely to repay their short-term commercial paper debt as they come due over the next few months, instead of rolling them over as is normal, according to a Reuters report. The group has appointed accountancy firm Grant Thornton for independent audits of some of its companies in a bid to discredit claims by short-seller Hindenburg Research that have battered its stocks and bonds, Reuters reported Monday.

The MSCI has changed the foreign inclusion factor in Adani Transmission, Adani Total Gas and Adani Enterprises, which could lead to estimated outflows of $416 million in these companies. The MSCI passive trackers will implement changes on February 28.

Adani Enterprises is expected to see its weight decline by 30 basis points, which could lead to outflows of about $161 million, according to estimates by Nuvama Alternative & Quant Research. Adani Transmission and Adani Total Gas will see their weights decline by 30 bps and 20 bps, resulting in estimated outflows of $145 million and $110 million, respectively. ACC’s weight will reduce by 2 bps, resulting in outflows of $12 million.

The affected securities will be further reviewed as part of the Full Country Float Review in May, which could lead to some index deletions and more passive selling, according to experts.

The MSCI defines the free float of a security as the proportion of shares outstanding that is considered available for purchase in the public equity markets by international investors.

Asian shares stutter, dollar rally pauses as Fed cues eyed

Asian stocks edged lower on Tuesday as the prospect of the U.S. central bank having to stay on its hawkish path weighed on sentiment, with investors looking to the minutes of the latest Federal Reserve meeting for further monetary policy clues. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan eased 0.34% to 531.85, hovering around six-week lows of 529.30 it touched last week.

The index is down nearly 3% this month after jumping 8.6% in January as a slew of robust U.S. economic data reinforced fears that interest rates may need to rise further and stay higher for longer. The market is now pricing U.S. interest rates to peak at 5.30% in July and remain above 5% by the end of the year, moving away from expectations of deeper rate cuts this year.

U.S. markets were closed on Monday due to President’s Day holiday. The yield on 10-year Treasury notes was up 3.5 basis points to 3.863%, after touching a three-month high of 3.929% on Friday. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond was up 1 basis points to 3.899%, while that of the two-year U.S. Treasury paper, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations, was up 5.4 basis points at 4.677%.

Investor focus is firmly on the release on Wednesday of the minutes of the Fed’s latest meeting when it raised interest rates by 25 basis points. In the currency market, the dollar hovered just shy of recent peaks as a three-week rally faded, with traders looking to European and U.S. manufacturing data later Tuesday and Friday’s core PCE price index to help guide their next steps. DBS currency strategist Philip Wee said the market is bracing for another surprise in the PCE data after the strong U.S. nonfarm payrolls and CPI readings this month.

The dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against six other rivals, was last at 104.01, just below a six-week high of 104.67 it touched on Friday. The euro fell 0.12% to $1.0669, and is set to snap four straight months of gains and end February lower. The yen weakened 0.12% to 134.40 per dollar, while sterling was last at $1.2022, down 0.13%.U.S. crude was up 1.02% at $77.12 per barrel and Brent was at $83.80, down 0.32% on the day.
