F&O Outlook: Trade with positive bias, look for buying opportunities on any declines, support at 17000

By Ruchit Jain

Post an extended weekend; our markets started trading with a gap down due to negative opening by Infosys and HDFC Bank post their results. The index recovered marginally from the lows and attempted to recover in Tuesday’s session. However, we witnessed a sharp sell-off in the last hour on Tuesday and Nifty not only breached the 17000 mark but also went on to mark a low tad above 16800. In Tuesday’s session, although FIIs were aggressive sellers in the cash segment, surprisingly bought index futures on that day.

The positive global markets provided a trigger for recovery ahead of the weekly expiry and on the expiry day, the markets witnessed buying interest which led to the index recovering most of the losses that were seen at the start of the week. Nifty Futures witnessed the formation of long positions on the expiry day and the call writers ran to cover their positions.

For the monthly expiry contract, the highest open interest is placed at 18000 call followed by 17500 strike. This indicates an immediate hurdle around 17500 which if surpassed, then it could led to a positive momentum till expiry. On the flipside, the support base for Nifty has now shifted higher to 17200 followed by 17000 mark. FIIs now have just over 50% of their positions on the long side in the index futures segment while the Long Short ratio of Retail clients in the index futures segment stands above 59%. Looking at the data, we expect a further recovery in the markets in the monthly expiry week and hence, traders are advised to trade with a positive bias and look for buying opportunities on any declines. One should place a stop loss below the support of 17000 while on the higher side; we expect levels of 17500 followed by 17800-17850. Due to its long formation, the Nifty may continue to relatively outperform the Bank Nifty index till expiry.

Windfall tax slashed on crude, fuels; check duty cuts on diesel, petrol, ATF exports

The Central Government on Thursday cut the windfall tax or the special additional excise duty (SAED) on domestically produced crude oil and diesel exports. The windfall tax on crude petroleum produced by companies like the state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has been reduced to Rs 4,350 from Rs 5,050/tonne as per the previous revision. The additional duty on diesel has been brought down to Rs 2.5 from Rs 7.5/litre earlier and the levy on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) or jet fuel has been cut to Rs 1.5 from Rs 6/litre, according to the latest notification issued by the Ministry of Finance. The levy on petrol continues to be nil.

On July 1, windfall profit taxes were first imposed on Indian companies as the country joined a growing number of nations that tax supernormal profits of energy firms. However, international oil prices have cooled since then, eroding the profit margins of both oil producers and refiners.

Meanwhile, crude oil prices rose on Thursday as the market shrugged off a giant U.S. crude inventory build and the International Energy Agency boosted its demand outlook. Brent crude futures rose 26 cents to $85.64 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 34 cents to $78.93. U.S. crude oil stocks soared last week by 16.3 million barrels to 471.4 million barrels, the highest level since June 2021, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said. The larger-than-expected build was largely due to a data adjustment, which analysts said muted the impact on oil prices.

LIC IPO shares may list with 12% premium; BSE Sensex, Nifty look to offer 15% return in long-term | INTERVIEW

Life Insurance Corporation of India’s (LIC) initial public offering, which has been subscribed two times so far, will close for subscription today. The issue continues to receive strong interest from employees, policyholders and retail investors. Sandip Sabharwal, investment advisor, expects a premium listing of LIC. In an interview with Surbhi Jain of Financial Express Online, Sandip Sabharwal said that LIC may list with 10-12 per cent premium. On stock market movement, Sabharwal sees up to 15 per cent returns in the long-term. Here are edited excerpts from the interview.

Amid rising interest rate regime, should investors rejig their portfolio?

Do you see RBI hiking repo rates in June MPC? If yes, then why?

They are way behind the curve and in the endeavour to get ahead aggressive monetary policy could be counter productive as it will slow down growth without bringing down inflation. An aggressive CRR hike combined with a 40 basis point hike should first be allowed to be absorbed by the market and then next action taken. Inflation has been on the upswing for many months now but the MPC and RBI turned a blind eye. Now that they have opened their eyes their actions should not hurt the fledgling economic recovery. In my view they will hike rates again but it will be the wrong move.

In which sectors do you think investors should invest for a 3-5 years view?

Consumer stocks have started to become attractive. As markets correct, financials will also become attractive. A new capital expenditure cycle has started and as such capital good companies should do well. There will be opportunities in many other sectors as the market correction plays out.

Seeing the LIC subscription numbers, what should investors expect on listing day?

That’s tough to predict but a 10-12% premium should be possible assuming markets remain at similar levels.

What is your near to medium term view on BSE Sensex, Nifty 50, and Nifty Bank?

This year will be tough for the markets. Over the long term markets should be able to deliver 12-15% returns.

Rupee falls 10 paise to close at 82.89 against US dollar

The rupee depreciated by 10 paise to settle at 82.89 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, as intense selling pressure in domestic equities and a strong greenback overseas dented the sentiment.

However, a sharp decline in crude oil prices in the international market restricted the rupee’s fall, forex traders said.

It finally closed at 82.89 against the US dollar, registering a fall of 10 paise over its previous close of 82.79.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.12 per cent higher at 104.23 ahead of the release of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting minutes later in the day.

Bond yields in the US have shot higher this month on anticipation of a firmer action by the Federal Reserve in its efforts to stamp out inflation.

Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities said, “Rupee traded weak below 82.85 amid increasing bond prices in the US which have spiked above November 2022 rates. Keeping the hawkish view on rate hikes the participants keep increasing positions in safer dollars against risky assets.

“Rupee weakness can be seen further below if RBI avoids intervention near 83.00.” The Reserve Bank will also release the minutes of the MPC meeting held this month.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures declined 1.48 per cent to USD 81.82 per barrel.

The 30-share BSE Sensex crashed 927.74 points or 1.53 per cent to close at 59,744.98, while the broader NSE Nifty declined 272.40 points or 1.53 per cent to 17,554.30.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) emerged as net buyers in the capital markets on Tuesday as they bought shares worth Rs 525.80 crore, according to exchange data.

Asia equities fall on fear of hawkish central bank hikes

Asian share markets followed Wall Street into the red on Wednesday as surprising strength in global surveys of services stoked fears that central banks would have to lift interest rates yet further and keep them up for longer. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.97%, after Wall Street posted its worst performance of the year on Tuesday, with an unexpectedly strong reading of S&P Global’s composite purchasing managers’ index (PMI) showing the U.S. economy was not cooling yet.

“The flow of economic data surprises has continued overnight and this time it was a uniformly stronger than expected performance of the services sector across major developed market economies,” National Australia Bank analysts wrote in a client note. “It concerns the market that central banks will have to hike rates a lot more to curb inflation,” said Kerry Craig, JPMorgan Asset Management’s global market strategist. New Zealand’s central bank raised interest rates by 50 basis points to a more than 14-year high of 4.75% on Wednesday.

Japan’s Nikkei share index fell 1.25% on Wednesday following a Tuesday PMI report showing the factory sector had contracted.China’s benchmark shed 0.68% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dropped down 0.27%.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index lost 0.25% in early trading, falling for a second straight session and touching its lowest in more than a month on expectations of interest rate rises.U.S. 10-year notes touched 3.966%, the highest since November, before easing to yield 3.9389% on Wednesday.

The dollar index fell 0.077%, but analyst expect interest rate rises to lift the dollar, hurting emerging market equities, which benefited from a falling dollar. U.S. crude fell 0.5% to $75.98 per barrel and Brent was at $82.68, down 0.45%.Spot gold added 0.1% to reach $1,836.18 an ounce.

The role of CLAT coaching centres in students’ success

By Harsh Gagrani

The prestigious Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) serves as the gateway to enrolling in the top institutions for law within the country. To ace this one of the most competitive examinations in the country, law aspirants have been increasingly opting for CLAT coaching centres to garner their essential support and resources.

CLAT coaching centers also provide guidance and the foundational support students can depend on. They also instill multiple analytical abilities in students, such as perfecting time management skills, providing personalized attention and effective exam strategies. The synergy of these elements transforms the path to success and makes the dreams of law aspirants a downright reality.

Here are some of the effective ways through which CLAT coaching centers offer an end to end guidance to law aspirants;

Unlocking success: CLAT coaching centres offer a structured approach that equips students with the tools they need to succeed in the CLAT examination. This comprehensive guidance ensures that aspirants have a step-by-step plan to tackle the complexities of the test. In an environment where the stakes are high, these coaching centres serve as a guiding light for the aspirants.

Defeating Doubts: CLAT is renowned for its complexity, and many aspirants grapple with doubts and challenges as they prepare for the exam. Coaching centres prove to be invaluable in this regard. They provide expert tutors who specialise in answering questions, clarifying complex legal concepts, and resolving any confusion. This one-on-one interaction is instrumental in helping students gain a deeper understanding of the subjects covered in CLAT.

Time Management Mastery: Efficient time management is a key element for CLAT success as the rigorous schedule and the need to handle challenging questions make effective time management a necessity. Coaching centres impart the art of managing time efficiently, ensuring that students can navigate the demanding examination schedule and approach difficult questions with confidence. This is a skill that extends well beyond CLAT, proving beneficial in their future legal careers.

Boosting Confidence: Self-doubt can be a significant roadblock to success in any examination, and CLAT is no exception. CLAT coaching centres play an essential role in bolstering students’ confidence. Through simulated exams that closely resemble the actual CLAT test, students receive real-time feedback that helps them identify their weaknesses. This repeated process allows them to build the self-assurance needed to excel in the actual examination.

Personalised Attention: The advantage of an excellent student teacher ratio is a distinctive feature of CLAT coaching centres. This allows for personalised attention to each student and ensures that no aspirant is left behind and that their specific needs are met.

Strategic Study Guidance: The CLAT is not just a test of knowledge but also a test of strategy. Experienced instructors at coaching centres share invaluable tips, tricks, and strategies that are crucial in cracking the CLAT. These strategies encompass everything from efficient time management during the examination to approaching specific types of questions with precision. The insights offered by these instructors are honed through years of experience and serve as a valuable asset for students seeking success.
